Commemorative stamp release for the 80th anniversary of the Summer Theater

On the occasion of his 80th anniversary of the Ramón Collazo Summer Theaterand within the framework of the 300 years of Montevideoa national postage stamp issued by the Uruguayan Post Office was presented. The seal was requested by the theater authorities from the Uruguayan Post Office for the role it plays in disseminating, inside and outside borders, everything that is part of the country’s cultural and historical heritage.

The presentation of the seal also takes place in the Heritage Daya massive event that takes place in the country during the weekend of October 5 and 6. The mayor of Montevideo, Federico Graña, participated in the activity; the director of the Department of Culture, María Inés Obaldia; the director of the Verano theater, Cristian Calace; the vice president of the Uruguayan Post Office, Julio Silveira; and the director of the Uruguayan Post Office, Roque Ramos Espíndola; as well as the visiting public.

Graña expressed the excitement of being in this activity on a special day such as Heritage Day. The leader referred to heritage not only as architectural expressions or historical stories, but also to what he defines as Homeland, understood as “our dreams, our ideas, our songs, our loves, our failures, sometimes too and that is our heritage”.

Graña also recalled the building renovations that are being done in the theater and explained that it is a renewal of care. “It’s like a parenthesis of silence that we are having, in which the theater is quiet because it is taking care of itself so that the best comes.”

“Renewing the commitment to the heritage of Uruguayans is to renew, relaunch it, look to the future and know that other generations will enjoy it even better than we do, with better quality and more comfort,” Graña concluded.

After the seal was presented, the first envelope was postmarked, so that its put into circulation was officially authorized. At the location, each person who went to postmark their envelope was given a fragment of the historic slab of the theater, present in the stalls until the beginning of this new stage of renovations.

SECOND STAGE OF SUMMER THEATER WORKS

The largest open-air entertainment center in the city began in May of this year with the remodeling and expansion work of a new upper tray that will allow it to increase its total capacity by about a thousand seats.

The general theater renovation project is divided into three stages. The first, carried out between May and September 2023, resulted in a partially renovated space in which the complete modernization of its lower stalls stood out, the incorporation of a new sector of preferential boxes in line with the installation of a modern accessible area for the public in wheelchairs, as well as a notable improvement in the facilities offered by the venue for its spectators, artists and production teams.

The second stage, which sets its completion date between the last days of October, focuses on the continuation of the improvements made in the stalls area: not only will the same seats placed in the lower stalls be installed throughout all the sectors, but also a new upper tray will be added that will allow a capacity of more than 5,000 seats.
