Whatsapp: Unknown calls & messages! Users have to be careful

The WhatsApp messenger offers its millions of users a wide range of options. Almost everywhere in the world, people can use WhatsApp to send messages or photos, send voice messages, share videos or even make phone calls to each other.

But technical progress also presents great dangers. WhatsApp users have recently been contacted repeatedly by unknown numbers – both by message and by call. There is often a scammer waiting on the other end of the line!

Whatsapp: calls and messages from distant countries

The Federal Network Agency is currently warning that WhatsApp users are primarily being contacted by numbers with the area code from India (+91), Iran (+98) or Mexico (+52). “It can be assumed that the calls have an abusive legal background,” the authority makes it clear.

If you miss a call from one of the area codes mentioned, you should under no circumstances call back or respond in any other way. If a personal conversation does occur, it is particularly important that no personal data is passed on over the phone or messenger.

Whatsapp: This is how users can protect themselves

Even if the person on the other end of the line claims to be an admirer, relative or employee of a lottery company, WhatsApp users should not fall for the scam.

There are several options for those affected to react in such a case. If it is a suspected close person, you can contact them via the previously known phone numbers. This way you can make sure whether it is really a relative or friend. If the unknown number turns out to be a scammer, it should be blocked immediately.
