Apple’s ultra-thin iPhone: display supplier revealed

Sources familiar with the matter report that Novatek, a Taiwanese manufacturer of display driver ICs, has announced plans to begin mass production of its new OLED TDDI technology.

This technology should be ready as early as the second quarter of 2025, which corresponds suspiciously well with Apple’s typical delivery times for components for new iPhone releases in the fall of each year.

The rumor suggests that the new iPhone category, unofficially called the “iPhone 17 Air,” will feature a significantly different form factor. This new iPhone variant, inspired by Apple’s current M4 iPad Pro models, is said to have an ultra-slim profile.

The technology behind the thin display

One of the main advantages of OLED TDDI technology is its ability to enable flatter screens. This feature makes it an ideal candidate for Apple’s ultra-slim iPhone design. By integrating the touch and display driver functions into a single chip, OLED-TDDI enables a reduction in display assembly height.

Currently we would describe the connection between Novatek and Apple as speculative. Neither company has made any official statements about a partnership or the development of components for future iPhone models.

Would you be interested in a particularly thin iPhone or is the current casing thickness completely sufficient for you? Feel free to write something about it in the comments, we are very excited.
