/ world today news/ The report on the development of mountain regions in Europe and a new system for their financing was presented at a meeting of the academic environment of mountain countries in Brussels under the title “Mountains for the future of Europe”.
It was initiated by Iliana Yotova and voted by the Parliamentary Committee on Regional Policy of the European Parliament. Discussions in the plenary hall are coming up in May this year. The report envisages a concrete policy of the European Union in the mountains and targeted investments to create employment and deal with the demographic crisis. “Mountains represent nearly 30% of the territory of Europe and 17% of the population. Innovation is key for them – in order to protect tourism and agriculture, scientific research activity to combat climate change and protect the environment must be encouraged. “Horizon 2020 ” offers opportunities for this by supporting small and medium-sized enterprises. These investments are particularly significant for mountain regions. Transport, education and the introduction of quality and high-speed Internet in these regions also need creative solutions. This will revive the economy of mountain regions For this purpose, a separate approach is needed in the European policy and especially in the policy for scientific research and innovation, with which strong results can be achieved against the depopulation of the mountains, which is their most serious problem,” said Viktor Bluskov, a member of the team of Iliana Yotova at the presentation of the report.
The conference was attended by representatives of academia from Bulgaria, Austria, Italy, Switzerland and other mountainous countries. They discussed the possibilities for innovation in mountain regions and proposed various measures to deal with the demographic crisis and proposed a program for investment in mountains in Horizon 2020. Representatives of the European Commission welcomed the initiative and stated that innovations can achieve a qualitative improvement in living conditions and permanently increase employment.
Iliana Yotova’s initiative is the first attempt of its kind to target the mountains as a territory, instead of specific regions. It aims to create a strategy for the development of mountain regions and to have specific investments at the European level for their development.
