High threat of anti-Semitic violence

Before the anniversary of the attack on Israel by the terrorist organization Hamas, Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) warns of a high threat from Islamist, anti-Semitic and anti-Israel violence. “Our bans on the terrorist organization Hamas and other Islamist organizations in Germany enable the authorities to take tough action,” the minister said on Friday. Any support for these organizations is a criminal offense; this applies to propaganda on the Internet as well as on the street.

“Especially now, given the drastic increase in anti-Semitic crimes in Germany, it is our responsibility to do everything we can to protect Jews,” emphasized Faeser.

According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the number of anti-Semitic crimes from January to early October 2023 more than doubled compared to the numbers in the same period this year. In 2023, 1,600 crimes were recorded by the police during this period. In 2024 the number in these months was 3,200. The ministry said the risk of violent attacks on Jews and Jewish institutions by extremists has also increased in the context of the Middle East conflict.

In the terrorist attack on October 7, 2023 in Israel, more than 1,200 people were brutally murdered and more than 240 women, men and children were abducted to the Gaza Strip. Around 100 hostages are still held by Hamas. epd
