BERLIN —
Bayern Munich won without playing on Saturday after Bundesliga rivals Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund dropped points to lesser rivals.
Dortmund collapsed and lost 2-1 to Union Berlin without injured striker Karim Adeyemi, who stood out in the 7-1 thrashing of Celtic on Tuesday in the Champions League.
Defending champion Leverkusen blew a two-score lead and ended up drawing 2-2 with Holstein Kiel. This is only the second point that Kiel has scored in its debut in the first division.
Leverkusen played in a special black jersey with a red stripe to commemorate the club’s 120th anniversary. It was also a special occasion for Xabi Alonso — the Spanish coach who took over the reins exactly two years ago.
Leverkusen fans didn’t have to wait long to celebrate after Victor Boniface opened the scoring after four minutes and Jonas Hofmann made it 2-0 four minutes later. Leverkusen seemed headed for a rout.
But the home team did nothing more with their dominance – another Boniface goal was disallowed for offside – and Kiel got a reprieve before half-time when Max Geschwil scored from a corner kick. Fiete Arp scored the tying goal with a penalty in the 69th.
Also, Freiburg beat Werder Bremen 1-0 and Wolfsburg enjoyed a 3-1 victory against Bochum.
St. Pauli later faces Mainz.
Leader Bayern visits Eintracht Frankfurt, which is second, on Sunday.
