Charlotte | Puebla Chronicle

Alejandro Cañedo Priesca

Charlotte, the largest city in the state of North Carolina, is known as the “Queen City,” in honor of Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, wife of King George III of England.

This vibrant city, located in the Piedmont region, has experienced impressive growth over the past few decades and has become a prominent destination for both tourists and people looking to move to a city with a robust economy, rich in history and with a wide variety of activities.

Founded in 1768, Charlotte has a history dating back to colonial times. Its strategic location made it a center of commerce, and during the American War of Independence it gained a reputation as a resilient city, as its inhabitants staunchly opposed British occupation.

With the North Carolina gold rush in the early 19th century, Charlotte became home to the first active gold mine in the United States, attracting prospectors and adventurers.

The city continued its expansion during the Civil War, playing an important role as a transportation and supply center for the Confederacy.

In the 20th century, it became a financial center of national importance and today it is the second most important banking center in the country after New York.

Charlotte has a mix of activities to suit everyone, from sports to arts and culture. Here are some of the highlights:

• Uptown Charlotte: is the heart of the city; a vibrant place full of skyscrapers, museums and restaurants. Here you will find the Discovery Place Nature and Science Center, where both adults and children can enjoy interactive exhibits, as well as the Levine Museum of the New South, which chronicles the evolution of the region after the Civil War.

• Nascar Hall of Fame: Charlotte is the motorsports capital of the United States and this hall of fame celebrates the history and legends of Nascar.

• Carowinds Amusement Park: is a theme park that straddles North and South Carolina. Home to thrilling roller coasters, themed areas for kids, and a water park with fun for the whole family.

• Mint Museum of Art: This museum has a collection of contemporary art, European design, African design, and American decorative art.

• Freedom Park: It is an oasis within the city, perfect for a day outdoors, with walking spaces, a lake, picnic areas and sports fields.

• Great Smoky Mountains National Park: Just a few hours from Charlotte is this national park, famous for its stunning mountain landscapes and abundant wildlife.

• Bechtler Museum of Modern Art: Houses an impressive collection of modern works by artists such as Picasso, Calder and Warhol, making it a unique space to explore 20th-century modernism.

• Bank of America Stadium: It is the home of the Carolina Panthers. During the season, attending a game is an essential experience to feel the vibrant energy of the city.

I also want to share activities that you can do if you visit this destination:

From barbecue to contemporary Southern fare, tours of the best restaurants will allow you to enjoy a delicious variety of dishes.

North Carolina wine country is growing in popularity and a visit to a vineyard can be a good experience.

A 20-minute drive away, Lake Norman is a destination for water sports or relaxing by the water.

Hiking trails at Crowders Mountain, an hour from Charlotte, is a great option for a nearby outdoor getaway.
