5 October: World Teachers’ Day

From ANPE we ask on this day of celebration and ask that the voice of the teachers be heard, that their work be recognized and that the working conditions be improved.

On October 5, 1966, the Recommendation of the International Labor Organization (ILO) and UNESCO concerning the Status of Teaching Teachers was adopted. This document defined the responsibilities and rights of teachers, while recommending standards on issues such as training, recruitment, employment and teaching and learning conditions.

Due to its importance as a reference framework for communication between education authorities, on the one hand, and teachers and their trade unions, on the other hand, 5 October 1994 was adopted as World Teachers’ Day. Since then, this anniversary has been a time to appreciate the role of teachers, as well as to reflect on the support we need to carry out our work and the challenges is the opposite of the post.

It is the motto chosen for this year ‘Valuing the teacher’s voice: towards a new social contract for education’in a situation where the shortage of teachers is increasing and their working conditions around the world are decreasing.

In APPEAL We are clear, as far as Spain is concerned, that a new social contract for education must go through the implementation of an education agreement based on a minimum agreement that will give stability to the education system and avoid the approval of new organic Education laws every year. time there is a change of government in the State.

This agreement must include the vision of the teachers in the centerwho knows best the reality of the classrooms and the needs of an increasingly diverse student body. Integrating the perspective of teachers and their unions in the design of education policies is not only a matter of respect for those of us who are on the front line of the teaching processes, but also a guarantee that the policies being made are reasonable enforcement. and appropriate, and according to the real needs of the students. With our training, knowledge and teaching experience, more successful and sustainable policies can be designed in the long term.

It is another key factor that needs to be put on the table need to promote an environment that supports the professional development of teachers. In APPEAL We believe that it is inevitable to negotiate and establish a new design of the profession in our country, as provided by the LOMLOE for the first year of validity – and we are already completing it ‘fourth. In this sense, we maintain that there is a need for a Teaching Statute that regulates, among other things, initial and ongoing training, access and professional development of teachers, and establishes the professional role.

Teachers are the fundamental foundation of the education system and the progress of society. To give prestige and value it is our duty to give education the importance it deserves. To do this, it is necessary to give ourselves a voice and promote our professional development, but also improve our working conditions. At this point, there are three basic objectives that must be given special attention: the reducing the ever-increasing bureaucratic burden which is imposed on us in our work, the modernization and extensive development of the network of institutions in which we teach, and the recovery of lost purchasing power from the cuts that followed the 2008 economic crisis.

On this day of celebration and request, from ANPE we want to thank the teachers for their daily efforts in their work and their commitment to public education, as well as raising their voices so that the – their demands and that their work will be recognized socially.
