A year after the actors’ strike led by Fran Drescher, she is back in front of the camera herself: in a table tennis film.
The nanny becomes an athlete’s mom: “The Nanny” star Fran Drescher, 67, plays the mother of the main character (played by Timothée Chalamet) in Josh Safdie’s table tennis film “Marty Supreme.” This is what the cast promises according to industry service “Variety”to make for an entertaining ping pong movie.
The athlete documentary is about the life of table tennis legend Marty Reisman (1930-2012). The New York native played from 1946 to 2002, won countless titles and, at 67, was the oldest player ever to win an open national table tennis tournament. He was also called: “The Wizard of Table Tennis”.

In addition to the 28-year-old Chalamet, who recently already first photos from the set made the rounds, and cult series babysitter Drescher also plays Gwyneth Paltrow, 52, her first film role since “Avengers: Endgame” (2019). Also in attendance: the well-known American magician Penn Jillette, 69, “Shark Tank” investor Kevin O’Leary (70, known from the American version of “The Lion’s Den”) and “Bad Lieutenant” filmmaker Abel Ferrara , 73.
There are few details about the film’s plot, but the studio is promoting the script about the life of the young table tennis pro as a “fictional work from the world of 1950s table tennis culture,” according to Variety. The mysterious project is already in production.
Fran Drescher is best known as the entertaining lead character of the US sitcom “The Nanny”, which ran from 1993 to 1999 and earned her two Emmy nominations and two Golden Globe nominations. She was elected president of SAG-AFTRA in 2021 and led the actors’ union in 2023 during the five-month actors’ strike that shut down the entire entertainment industry.
