With the decline in consumer interest in electric drive vehicles, Toyota has delayed production of the seven-seat crossover for the US market for at least a year.
The Japanese automaker planned to start production in 2025, but now the dates have been pushed back to the summer of 2026. The publication Nikkei Asia writes about it, adding that Toyota does not ‘ abandon this project completely, but that he is reorganizing the beginning of production so that a change in the attitude of customers is visible in the market. True, it seems that the technical twin of this crossover in the form of Lexus, which was planned to be produced in the USA from 2030, will be imported from Japan.
This spring, Toyota announced plans for a new electric crossover for the US market. For this reason, the Japanese invested 1.3 billion dollars in Toyota’s largest plant in Kentucky, but the return on investment will have to wait, because the demand for electric cars is falling.
Such trends are also being observed in the global market, so Toyota has reduced the production plan of electric cars for 2026 from 1.5 million to 1 million copies.
As the market cools, more car makers are delaying the full transition to electric vehicles and launching new green models. In addition to Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Bentley and Ford also have similar designations.
