“Roots Tourism is an extremely important tool for strengthening ties with more than 80 million Italians and Italian descendants. In the year of Italian Roots in the World, we want to celebrate the great achievements of our relatives by participating in the main events of the identity of our communities abroad” said Tajani, who pointed out how the special value at the initiative in a country like Argentina, which hosts the largest community of Italians living abroad.
Italea is an initiative of the MAECI launched in 2024 (the year of Italian Roots in the World) within the PNRR project and funded by NextGenerationEU, with the aim of promoting the return and welcoming of immigrants from Italy. The project has already been presented in Toronto, Sao Paulo and Montevideo: the next stops will be in Melbourne (October 3-8) for the Melbourne Italian Festa and in New York (October 9-15) during Columbus Day. along with exhibitions (“A different story – Postcards from Calabria”), book exhibitions (“The Italian entertainment community in New York and the birth of Italian American cinema”), cooking demonstrations and musical events.
Roots Tourism was born with the aim of discovering culture, rituals and traditions and promoting places that are not destinations for mass tourism. The project includes more than 800 Italian villages, which won the tender to implement cultural activities for Italian descent.
