The epidemiological report corresponding to week 38 also records so far this year 10 probable cases of diphtheria, 24 of whooping cough, 21 of tetanus in non-neonatal ages, 405 of leptospirosis, one of human rabies and 14 of cholera.

In its weekly report, the Ministry of Public Health indicates that in the last week 55 probable cases of dengue were reported, among which two confirmed cases were found.

The cases captured are geographically distributed in the provinces of Hermanas Mirabal, Espaillat, Barahona and Santiago Rodríguez. 51% of the cases affected the female sex in the age group of 10 to 19 years with 32% of the cases reported to that date.

Diphtheria

Diphtheria is a bacterial disease that affects the respiratory tract and can be fatal, especially in children. As of September 21, 10 probable cases have been reported, without distinction of sex.

The most affected were the group aged 5 years to 9 years, with the majority of cases coming from the provinces of La Vega and San Cristóbal.

Public Health remembers that diphtheria is prevented with a vaccination that requires several doses and that, in 2023, 84% of children received the three recommended doses, leaving 16% without adequate immunization.

Regarding malaria, the official report indicates that during epidemiological week 38, 170 suspected cases and four confirmed cases were reported, those affected resided in the provinces of Santo Domingo, San Juan and the National District.
