The federal government published a decree to extend the regularization mechanism for “chocolate cars” until September 2026, which expired on the 30th of this month, that is, the last day of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s government.

Through the evening edition of the Official Gazette of the Federation, the government indicated that derived from the good acceptance of the program and since the demand from people who request the regularization of vehicles of foreign origin continues, it is considered necessary to extend the validity of the decree.

The decree is still and will be in force in Baja California, Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, Coahuila de Zaragoza, Durango, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Michoacán de Ocampo, Nayarit, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tamaulipas, Tlaxcala and Zacatecas.

In these states, the publication points out, an approximate of 2 million 559 thousand 256 vehicles have been regularized, which provided legal certainty and protection to the citizens’ assets and contributed to guaranteeing public safety, by having the means to identify the owners of said vehicles to prevent them from engaging in the commission of illegal acts.

He highlighted that with the regularization of used vehicles of foreign origin, it has been possible to raise approximately 6,398,140,000 pesos, which has allowed paving actions to be carried out in the municipalities of the participating states, for the benefit of their inhabitants. and neighbors from nearby areas.

The decree, which came into force two years ago, has already had a total of eight extensions, the last one last March, which would end this month. However, the term has now been increased for two more years.

This measure has not been well received by the country’s automotive industry, which has referred to it as a law to regularize “automotive scrap,” which also allows the formalization of vehicle smuggling.
