Wisconsin Badgers veteran running back Chez Mellusi has decided to take time off from the team to fully recover from his injuries. According to a statement from the program, his current focus is on full recovery after facing repeated significant health setbacks in recent years.
Mellusi, who has appeared in 26 games for the Badgers since transferring from Clemson to Wisconsin, has missed 17 games due to injuries. Despite initial success in returning during the spring season preparation, new injuries forced him to take a break again this season. A broken left fibula and a dislocated ankle injury that required a full reconstruction highlight the running back’s recent challenges.
With seven more scholarship players in the backcourt, the Wisconsin team is faced with the task of spreading the load in the running game. Tawee Walker could play a more central role in the future, while players like Cade Yacamelli, who is currently second on the team with 153 rushing yards, as well as newcomers Darrion Dupree and Dilin Jones could also get their chances.
Head coach Luke Fickell emphasized the need to tighten up the running back rotation to develop the best players and give them the opportunity to find their rhythm. The decision as to who will act as the main player in the running game in the future could not only be crucial for the Badgers this season, but also in order to best fill the gap that Mellusi leaves behind.
An exciting clash awaits fans next Saturday when Wisconsin takes on Purdue at Camp Randall Stadium.
