WhatsApp is not only popular for its chat function. Making phone calls now also takes up a large part of the app. Video calls should become even more attractive in the future – WhatsApp has now introduced filters and backgrounds for this purpose.
WhatsApp has been offering its users internet-based telephony since 2015. Since then, a few functions have been added. You can now not only have conversations on WhatsApp, but also make video calls. It doesn’t matter whether you only have one conversation partner or several.
In the future, these video calls should be “even more entertaining” as stated in a blog post from the company. WhatsApp has now introduced filters and backgrounds for video calls. We’ll show you how you can use it to customize your calls.
Add filters and backgrounds for video calls on WhatsApp – here’s how
“Conversations on WhatsApp should always be fun and expressive,” at least that’s what the Meta subsidiary wants. To add a bit of color to video calls on WhatsApp, you can also use different filters and backgrounds in the future.
Of course, this function is not new in the world of video telephony – at least since the Corona pandemic, which was characterized by numerous video calls and digital events. WhatsApp is now following suit and, among other things, lets you blur your background.
In the future, you will be able to choose from ten filters and ten backgrounds for your video calls in WhatsApp. A combination of these is also possible. WhatsApp wants to enable you to “give your call a more personal touch” and create “a unique look”.
When it comes to filters, you can choose from the following options: Warm, Cool, Black and White, Light Leak, Dreamy, Prism Light, Fisheye, Classic TV, Frosted Glass and Two-Tone. Background options include Blur, Living Room, Office, Cafe, Pebbles, Foodie, Smoosh, Beach, Sunset, Celebration and Forest.
Change filters and background directly in the call
In the future, you can change filters and backgrounds directly in your video call on WhatsApp. In the future you will find effect symbols in the upper right corner of your screen.
If you tap on this, a bar will open at the bottom of the screen with your options for filters and backgrounds. Here you can swipe back and forth between the effects – similar to Instagram Stories.

WhatsApp offers you the two menus separately. On the left you will find the filters, with a swipe to the left you will also have access to the backgrounds.
Here you also have access to the additional Refine and Low Light options. According to WhatsApp, these naturally improve the appearance and brightness of your surroundings. This is how you want your video calls to look “livelier and more pleasant”.
