With new programs and a 100% increase in the number of students, the second academic year begins for the Burgas branch of the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”.
“In just one year, the Branch increased several times the number of majors from which prospective students can choose to study. From the initial one bachelor’s program and several master’s, from the academic year 2024-2025, prospective students can now target programs such as Regional Development and Governance, Regional Security, Human Resource Management, Applied Geoinformatics, Climate Change and Water Management , Geomorphology, Management of the natural environment and risk processes, Antiquity and the Middle Ages, Modern Bulgaria: State and Society, Museology, Digital Humanities, Educational Management, Management of non-formal education services and organizations, Development and management of rural areas, Music Art Management, Audiovisual design, Audio production and mastering, Music pedagogy – leadership of a musical formation, Church management, Christian pilgrimage, Orthodox theology. The latter is precisely an example of a program created especially for the audience in Burgas in response to the great interest in theology in the first year.” – said in his address the director of the Branch – Burgas, Prof. Dr. Teodor Sedlarski, and added that the newly admitted students are not only from Burgas, but also from Sofia, Plovdiv, Stara Zagora, Varna, etc. With this, the total number of students in the upcoming academic year approaches 100.
In the new year, the branch will once again teach bachelors and masters in the professional fields of “Music and Dance Art” and “Theology”.
In addition to them, Master’s programs in Burgas will be held by the Faculty of History and Geology – the Faculty of Geography of the Alma Mater, and next year the Faculty of Slavic Philology will offer two more new programs – “Old Bulgarian Studies” and “Preservation of the Bulgarian Cultural Heritage”.
“Combined with the strong candidate-student results of the other Burgas universities, this news comes to confirm the rapid imposition of the idea of Burgas as a new university center for the country,” Prof. Dr. Teodor Sedlarski also said.
The festive opening ceremony began with a water blessing, performed by His Eminence Metropolitan Arseniy of Sliven and the clergy of Burgas. In his address to those present, he emphasized the role of the “Theology” specialty and the Faculty of Theology for the Sliven Diocese and spiritual education in Bulgaria.
The Mayor of Burgas, Dimitar Nikolov, welcomed the students and academic staff of the Branch and expressed his support for all activities related to the development of higher education. The Municipality of Burgas is a co-initiator for the opening of the Sofia University branch.
A congratulatory address was sent by the regional governor of the Burgas region, Prof. Ph.D. Maria Neikova, the rector of Burgas State University “Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov”, the director of the National Academy of Arts – Branch, Burgas.
Special guests at the opening ceremony were the talented performers from the “Sea Sands” vocal group, led by Milena Dobreva, conductor, composer, arranger and honorary citizen of Burgas.
A musical greeting was also given by students and teachers from the “Multimedia Technologies and Sound Direction” specialty.
The event was honored by Prof. Milen Zamfirov – Dean of the Faculty of Educational Sciences and Arts, Dean of the Faculty of Theology Assoc. Dr. Ivaylo Naydenov, professors of Sofia University, representatives of higher education institutions in Burgas, directors of schools, public figures, representatives of cultural institutions in the city.
