The duels between HC Kriens-Luzern and GC Amicitia Zurich were a lot to talk about last season. In the playoff semi-finals, the teams dueled in an exciting series (best-of-5), which Kriens-Luzern won 3-2. NLA head coach Zeljko Musa also raised the warning finger in the run-up to yesterday’s game. Not because of these recent games, no, because his team managed a clear 35:23 win at St. Otmar St. Gallen in their last appearance. Despite success, not everything was perfect; in some areas we needed to improve.
The coach’s words seemed to be heard by the players at the beginning, as they got off to a brilliant start in the Krauerhalle in front of 700 fans. But only in the starting minutes, as it turned out later. After six minutes, Central Switzerland led 3-0. The third goal was worth seeing, scored by On Langenick, who benefited from a quick pass from goalkeeper Kevin Bonnefoi.
The Musa team, with a strong defense at the beginning, subsequently extended their lead to 6:3 (13th), but had to make it 6:6 (16th) after a short, but as it later turned out, a fatal phase of weakness and accept some lapses in concentration. HCKL sports director Nik Tominec was annoyed: “We let the opponent get back into the game in these minutes after an actually good start.”
An orgy of mistakes and then the opponent escapes
From this point on, the Zurich team no longer made things so easy for the hosts with their aggressive style of play. Kriens-Luzern was unable to break away in the first half, but there were one or two mistakes made offensively. Defensively, however, the performance with eleven goals conceded could be rated as positive. What was worth seeing at the end of the first half was the 11:11 equalizer by Radojica Cepic, who outwitted the wall and goalkeeper Viacheslau Saldatsenka with a free throw.
After the break, the picture initially remained unchanged; the teams met on equal terms. The game was still on a knife edge. Zurich were then able to take the lead for the first time with two goals (39th; 16:14), later with 20:15 (44th) and 23:15 (49th). An orgy of errors by the home team, due to a blatant lack of finishing and a rapid decline in performance, put the Zurich team on the road to victory. The mortgage weighed too heavily, GC Amicitia won 29:25.
Tominec summarized: “We lost against a good opponent who is clearly below his value in the rankings. Our game was too flawed, you can’t win like that.” In addition, the HCKL was unable to convert any of the four penalties. A setback for the team, which is in third place after the seventh matchday and nine points.
Now the taillights await
It continues on Saturday (7.30 p.m., Basel Rankhof) with the away game at RTV Basel. The northwestern Swiss are in last place, but ended their series of defeats at Wacker Thun by winning their first point (22:22).
By the way: The draw in the Swiss Cup gives vice-Swiss champions HC Kriens-Luzern a bye in the round of 16.
