The District Court of South Karelia convicted the man of causing damage.
The couple’s hotel weekend went horribly wrong when the man went on a rampage and started kicking the hotel room furniture out of the room and doing other damage in February 2023 in Lappeenranta.
The man had booked a hotel room for himself and his spouse at the spa hotel in Rauha, Saimaa.

In the night between Saturday and Sunday, the emergency center received two calls about a rampaging man.
– I would need the police here. Here, a man has become a bit aggressive in the hotel room, a man belonging to the hotel staff told the emergency operator shortly after half past two in the morning.

The hotel staff found out about the riot when his female friend ran to the reception to tell about the incident.
In the corridor of the hotel, the reception staff were met by chairs and lamps thrown from the room. Inside the room was chaos. One chair had fallen over, there were alcohol cans on the floor and the seats were scattered.
Some of the furniture and goods had to be completely renewed or repaired. The hotel suffered EUR 1,500 in damage from the rampage.

The man who worked at the reception got the shirtless rioter locked in the room and then reported the incident to the emergency center.
The emergency center operator asked the hotel employee if the man had any tools or other equipment. The employee said no. According to the employee, the man was wearing pants, but no shirt.
While the police were on their way to the hotel room where the man was confined, he managed to sneak out of the room.
The man went to the hotel lobby, where a female friend saw the man and reported his movements to the emergency center. The police caught the man during the call.

Convicted of murder
The prosecutor demanded a harsh punishment of at least 80 days’ fine for the rioter for causing damage.
The South Karelia District Court found the man guilty of causing damage. The sentence was 70 daily fines, of which he had to pay 980 euros.
The court ordered the man to compensate the hotel 1,280 euros for the damage he caused. The hotel also demanded compensation for the time the room was out of use due to renovations. The court rejected the claim because the hotel had rooms of the same level available on all other days except one.
The verdict is final.
According to information from Iltalehti, the man who went on a rampage in the hotel was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder in his twenties, from which he has since been released.
