Gavin Creel, the Broadway actor and singer, has died at the age of 48 at his home in Manhattan, New York, after being diagnosed with cancer two months ago. Creel, a key name in musical theater, was facing a rare type of cancer called metastatic melanotic sarcoma of the peripheral nerve sheath, a type of tumor that affects the nerves that extend from the spinal cord to the rest of the body.
Despite medical efforts and the treatment received at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the aggressive progression of the disease led to him being transferred to palliative care, where he spent his last days.
Gavin Creel will be remembered for his impressive career in the world of musical theater, where he shined in numerous productions. He was especially recognized for his role in Hello, Dolly!, for which he won the Tony Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical in 2017, sharing the stage with the iconic Bette Midler.

In 2014, he was also awarded the Olivier Award for his performance in The Book of Mormon, establishing himself as one of the most outstanding talents on the theater scene both on Broadway and in London’s West End.
Throughout her career, Creel participated in other high-profile productions, including Hair, Into the Woods and Waitress, and her colleagues have paid emotional tributes following her death. Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of Hamilton, has published an emotional message on his Instagram account in which he describes Creel as “an incredible force of charisma and talent” and has fondly remembered their collaboration during the first phase of development of the construction site.
