In his youth, Cak Imin was active in student organizations, including as the General Chairman of the PMII Executive Board (1994-1997) and as the General Chairman of the Yogyakarta Branch of PMII (1991-1997).

When he was the Minister of Manpower and Transfers during the Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono government, Cak Imin’s name was highlighted in the “cardboard durian” scandal. This scandal refers to the discovery of IDR 1.5 billion in a cardboard box at the office of the Ministry of Manpower and Transfer in 2011 by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

On 25 August 2011, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) arrested two ministry officials, namely the Secretary of the Director General of Development of Transfer Areas I Nyoman Suisnaya and the former Head of the Department of Planning and Evaluation of Programs of the Ministry of Personnel and Transmission. , Dadong Irbarlawan. They are suspected of receiving a bribe of IDR 1.5 billion from a businessman named Dharnawati, who is associated with the Program for the Acceleration of Regional Infrastructure Development of Transmigration (PPIDT). Dadong Irbarelawan said in the 2012 lawsuit that the money was said to be given to Muhaimin Iskandar. He revealed that in May 2011 Nyoman called him to a meeting where Dharnawati and Dhany S. Nawawi, who was a Special Staff to the President, were also present.

Muhaimin admitted he was disturbed by how the bribery case unfolded, but denied involvement, saying he was not aware of anyone who might have tried to frame him. .
