Iltalehti asked the chairwoman of the Greens, Sofia Virra, whether she considers it a threat that environmental radicalization turns into violence.
Iltalehti reported on Sunday that over the weekend, in the closed discussion group of Elokapina, they fantasized about political violence, i.e. about the right-wing government led by Prime Minister Petteri Orpo (kok) being “slaughtered with an axe”.
Elokapina disowned the “rhetorical violence” in the discussion group and removed the messages from the discussion group.
Iltalehti asked the chairperson of the Greens, Sofia Virra, on Sunday whether she considers it a threat that environmental radicalization turns into violence.
At the time of the interview, Virta was not yet aware of the “threat to attack with an ax” presented in the Elokapina group. He commented on the case in question to Iltalehte later via text message.
– It is obvious that neither I nor the Greens accept any kind of violence, the threat of it or fantasizing about it in any situation. And no one should accept. On the contrary, much more work should be done in this country to prevent and combat all violence, Virta said.
Earlier on Sunday, Virta commented on a more general level about the possibility of environmental radicalization becoming violent, stating that she should first consult experts to know if there is a real threat of environmental violence in Finland.
Virta emphasized the responsibility of the decision-makers in responding to people’s anxiety, whether it is about the island, the climate or some other malaise related to people’s everyday life.
– However, our decision-makers should always remember to look in the mirror to see if we are making such policies that people can trust in the future.
– I would hope that we would genuinely talk about the consequences of our decisions, and not always just look for the guilty, says Virta.
According to the chairman of the Greens, looking for the culprits is the task of the rule of law.
– Of course, they (the guilty) always have to be searched when similar acts take place, Virta says.
According to Virra, the Greens also do not accept Elokapina’s tampering with the parliament building.
According to Virra, the same rules apply to Elokapini as other organizations and movements.
– What is illegal in Finland is illegal in Finland, says Virta.
