The nights are cold, especially in clear areas.

The cold nights have already come to Finland, and the situation will continue the same, the meteorologist on duty at the Finnish Meteorological Institute Petri Hoppula tells.
– Last night, for example, there were freezing temperatures as far as central Finland, Hoppula says.
Next week, especially on clear nights, night frosts can be expected more widely, especially in the central and northern parts of the country. In the coldest regions, the mercury can sink even below five degrees below zero.
In the south, there is at least a chance of frost, which means the temperature on the surface of the earth can be on the freezing side.
– There can be a difference of five degrees between the earth’s surface and the normal measurement height of two meters, says Hoppula.
In addition to the cold weather, in the south you can walk around freezing in the wee hours anyway.
Be alert for traffic
Lapland will also see some snowfall next week. From the beginning of the week, snow will fall mainly in Northern Lapland. On Friday, a more abundant rain area will move over Lapland, with which five centimeters of snow can fall all the way to Central Lapland.
Road surfaces can also freeze on frosty nights if the moisture cannot leave the surfaces.
– That’s probably what the road keepers are watching closely now, Hoppula estimates.
– Road users should now pay attention to the fact that there can be black ice on road surfaces at night.
From the beginning of the week, there will also be some rain in the regions of Southern Lapland and Northern Ostrobothnia, but then the rains will come as water.

The last heat wave?
According to Hoppula, current forecasts for a longer period of time change quickly in different directions every day. However, based on the ten-day weather forecasts, it is possible that some kind of heat wave from the direction of southern Scandinavia may come to Finland in a good week.
– According to the current forecasts, it is possible that in about a week the temperatures in the south can still go over ten or even fifteen degrees, says Hoppula.
However, the forecast is very uncertain for that time.
At the moment, it is not visible that the daytime temperatures will fall below ten in the whole country at the same time during the next ten days. In the colder areas of Lapland, there are also no daytime frosts for the first week of October.

It’s bound to get cold
Next week there will be little rain and the whole country will be generally quite dusty and sunny. Despite the heat, daytime temperatures in the south will be around ten degrees at most from the beginning of the week. Narrow areas of rain move over Lapland.
On Tuesday, however, daytime temperatures may still rise to more than ten degrees as far as North Ostrobothnia. Even in Lapland, the temperature remains above five degrees, with the exception of Northern Lapland.
On Thursday, temperatures will remain below ten throughout the country, except for the southern coast.
In the longer term, according to Hoppula, it is clear that with the shortening of the days and the progress of autumn, the weather will be getting colder all the time anyway. However, he reminds us that in southernmost Finland, the start of the actual winter may have been delayed until the turn of the year in some years.
