Szymczak: The grenade launchers were supposed to be used
The explosion at the Police Headquarters occurred in mid-December 2022 after the visit of General Inspector Szymczyk in Ukraine. The then commander – as he himself explained – received grenade launchers as a gift from the heads of the local services, which were supposed to be used and which he brought to Poland. However, one of them broke out in the back of his office.
In this case, the Ministry of Interior and Administration conducted an inspection at the command, which – as reported by the then head of this ministry, Marcin Kierwiński, on February 23 – revealed 27 very serious deficiencies.
What are the allegations about?
– Notifications will be submitted to the prosecutor’s office. The first notification will concern the former Chief Commander of Police, General Szymczyk, and will concern Art. 263 par. 2 of the Penal Code – possession of a weapon, grenade launcher, contrary to applicable regulations – Kierwiński announced in February.
He said that the second notification would concern the violation of Article 231 par. 1 of the Penal Code. – That is failure to fulfill obligations and acting to the detriment of the public or private interest by failing to issue instructions to perform a pyrotechnic check of the received gift, grenade launcher, despite having the capabilities, strength and resources to do so, Kierwiński said.
The notification to the prosecutor’s office also concerned the issue of failure to order an evacuation after a grenade launcher explosion at the headquarters of the Police Headquarters. According to the head of the Ministry of Interior and Administration, the reason for not taking action to protect people on the premises of the Police Headquarters at the time of the explosion was chaos, incompetence and fraud.
In March, the then spokesman for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Warsaw, Szymon Banna, announced that the prosecutor’s office had initiated an investigation into failure to fulfill obligations due to failure to check the received grenade launcher for mining and sapper purposes and possession of a firearm without the required permit.
Jarosław Szymczyk served as the Chief of Police during the PiS government, in 2016–2023.
