São Paulo., The climate catastrophe that affected the state of Rio Grande do between May and July Sul, southern Brazil, caused losses with flooding and destruction of cities and fields estimated at 87 billion reais (about 15 billion dollars), reported this Sunday the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
The announcement was made to the Brazilian press by the president of the IDB, Brazilian Ilan Goldfajn, in by virtue of the fact that the entity participates in the damage assessment together with the World Bank (WB) and the Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLAC).
Rio Grande do Sul suffered the worst rains and floods in its history, affecting 90 percent of its territory and 2.4 million people, while the tragedy caused 183 dead and 27 missing.
“We have just completed a mission to assess the damage: 87 billion reais (15 billion dollars),” Goldfajn reported.
The president of the BID says that this figure represents 1.8 percent of the Domestic Product Brazil’s Gross in 2024.
The official highlighted that the IDB has allocated 4 billion reais (about 727 million dollars) for the reconstruction of Rio Grande do Sul, a state bordering Argentina and Uruguay, one of the main agribusiness and industrial hubs in Brazil.
“Rio Grande do Sul showed us that it is serious, it is not just the Amazon or the drought that we are seeing now. We must continue monitoring the situation,” he said, warning on the effects of climate change on the economies of countries.
The IDB, WB and ECLAC report will be published in the coming days, the official announced.
