Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer has warned young Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz about his “physical abilities”: The 21-year-old is already considered one of the best players currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles category, along with Italy’s Jannik Sinner and Serbia’s tennis legend Novak Djokovic.
Federer, considered one of the greatest players in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category in the Open era with 20 Grand Slam titles, was recently quoted in a report urging the young Spaniard to respect his physical abilities and not to push the limits.
“His intensity, the power of his punches, his physical abilities,” he said. “Of course he has to be careful not to chase every ball because that’s not necessary. But he’ll learn that with age and time. But he’s also very strong (mentally) when it matters.”
Alcaraz is coming off a fabulous 2024 season, winning two of four Grand Slam titles. The former world number one initially won the French Open after defeating the German Alexander Zverev in the final in a five-set thriller 6:3, 2:6, 5:7, 6:1, 6:2. He then won the Wimbledon title after defeating Serbian Djokovic in three sets 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 in the final. Alcaraz also reached the final of the individual competition at the Olympic Games in Paris, where he lost to Djokovic in two sets 7:6, 7:6. He is currently taking part in the China Open, where he secured a place in the round of 16 after defeating France’s Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 to open the tournament.
