Segovia is facing the campaign against the flu with 45,795 vaccinations

With the arrival of the cold it brings viral diseases of respiratory origin such as the flu, to which Covid has been added since 2020 and in children the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) or bronchiolitis. Experience has shown that vaccination is the most effective way to deal with these diseases, which is getting vaccinated or reducing their symptoms in the general population. To this end, the Government of Castilla y León already has everything ready to start the flu vaccination campaign, and the COVID and RSV vaccination campaign has been added to complete the virtuous cycle of prevention with the to close the regional health system.

On October 14, the vaccination campaign against the flu and Covid-19 will begin in Castilla y León in all groups of the population that are targeted. Two weeks earlier, on October 1, it will do so with institutionalized people and other priority population groups, such as children between 6 and 59 months and pregnant women.

For the 2024-2025 campaign, the Ministry of Health has purchased 713,500 doses of flu vaccine. The total expenditure is 9,711,422 euros, including the intranasal vaccination for children from 24 to 59 months.
In Segovia, the flu will be fought by giving 45,795 doses, with more than 50 percent of these of the tetravalent type for fractional viruses, of which 27,800 doses will be distributed. As a novelty, this year the improved vaccine will be used in the population aged 60 and over; which in previous seasons, was given to people over 65 years old. This vaccine offers greater immunity and protection in older adults than non-immune vaccines.

In the case of the flu vaccine, the campaign will be directed gradually to those population groups with a higher risk of complications if they suffer from the flu infection and to people who can transmit it to others at there is a high risk of complications.
During the regional flu campaign in 2023, vaccination coverage will increase as age increases, with the percentages achieved among the different age groups as follows: between 60 and 64 inclusive year, 34.84% (64,436 vaccinated people); between 65 and 69 years of age, 54.41% (86,456); between 70 and 74 years old, 65.80% (89,880); 75 years and older, 79.05% (265,308).
According to the province, the total number of people who received the vaccine last season was: Avila, 48,543 (30.5% of the total population); Burgos, 94,901 (26.6%); León, 122,566 (27.4%); Palencia, 46,155 (30.3%); Salamanca, 98,917 (28.2%); Segovia, 43,620 (28.2%); Syria, 27,157 (30.4%); Valladolid, 144,636 (27.8%); Zamora, 54,115 (32.5%); and those who joined, 4,824.

The COVID vaccine

The aim of vaccination against Covid-19 is to strengthen the protection of the most vulnerable people and health and social workers to reduce morbidity and mortality and the impact of this disease on health care capacity.
Regarding this aspect, the vaccination campaign in Segovia will have distributed 2,300 doses in 480 vials, which represents 48% of the target population for this disease. The 2023 campaign against Covid-19 in Castilla y León shows a total number of vaccinated citizens of 485,710, that is, 20.3% of the Castilian and Leonese population. It is worth emphasizing the vaccination of people aged 60 and over, a group of the general population to which the campaign is basically directed, among whom 416,797 people were vaccinated, 51.1% of the population of that age.
Regarding vaccination against Bronchiolitis or RSV, vaccination coverage in Segovia will reach 900 doses, and the Ministry of Health will carry out a special campaign at the beginning of the season during the month of October, giving the dose at the health center or regularly . vaccination center for children born between the months of April and September.
