For the first time, intimate images of the relationship between King Juan Carlos I and Bárbara Rey come to light. Some photographs that are now revealed by the Dutch press and that show the then head of state and his former lover kissing and in an affectionate attitude.
The photographs, which date back to 1994 and were taken at the artist’s home, were published this Wednesday by the Dutch publication ‘Privé’, in whose pages the now emeritus king and the star hug and kiss. The artist’s own son, Ángel Cristo Jr., is the one who provided these snapshots to the magazine: it states that he himself would have taken them secretly when he was 13 years old, at the request of his mother, and that the artist used them to blackmail the monarch.
In statements to ‘Espejo Público’, Bárbara Rey herself has reacted to the publication of this graphic material by assuring that she knew nothing. “I didn’t know it could go to this extreme, what a shame,” he lamented. “This shows who my son is and what he is like,” he stated. “Up to here,” he declared.
Last July, the artist filed a lawsuit against her son, according to the aforementioned program. In that complaint, according to ‘Vanitatis‘, he accused him precisely of having stolen photographs in which he appeared with King Juan Carlos.
The emeritus is precisely these days in Sanxenxo, Galicia, where he plans to participate in nautical competitions. The publication of these unpublished images also coincides with the news that he will publish a memoir in France at the beginning of next year, as reported this Tuesday by the French magazine ‘Point de Vue’.
Juan Carlos I, who will turn 87 in January, left for Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates) in August 2020 in the midst of the investigation into his tax irregularities, which the Supreme Court Prosecutor’s Office ended up filing in 2022. With Bárbara Rey he maintained an intermittent relationship that lasted almost two decades, between 1976 and 1994, and that was an open secret until relatively recently, when people also began to talk publicly about his extramarital relationship with Corinna Larsen.
The issue is also openly addressed in the documentary series ‘Una vida Bárbara’, in which the artist speaks about it in the first person.
