GTA 6 and Gamestop as a perfect match?

A real hype has been created around GTA 6 – the video game is probably the most anticipated title of all at the moment. Retail could particularly benefit from this, at least as long as Rockstar Games designs the physical version of the game accordingly.

GTA 6 is a game on which a lot of hopes rest: fans want the most perfect entertainment possible for, at best, many years to come, retailers hope for rapid sales and correspondingly good sales. Both seem quite realistic in Grand Theft Auto 6. For comparison: the successful predecessor GTA 5 is worth several billion. The game has generated over six billion US dollars, making it the highest-grossing audiovisual product ever. The installment is the second best-selling title in video game history after Minecraft.

The sales strength of GTA 5 already indicates how big Grand Theft Auto 6 could be – due to the recent price increases for video games alone, another record is quite likely, because lower sales figures are unlikely. Retailers benefit directly from this – those who sell purely digital products, but also all retailers who operate local brick-and-mortar stores. The world-famous games chain Gamestop in particular is likely to hope that GTA 6 will be a success again. Because: When the global release of GTA 5 by Rockstar Games for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 took place on September 17, 2013, the Gamestop branches were packed on release night.

In order for brick-and-mortar retailers to really benefit from the success of GTA 6, the game must first appear in a physical version. Publishers like Microsoft or Sony now often take direct sales routes, leaving retailers out of the equation. However, this is at least not to be expected with a AAAA game like GTA 6. Rockstar Games and Take-Two will want to grab all the attention and rely on both digital sales channels and local retail.

GTA 6, as an exception, may even be able to bring about a rethinking of physical game boxes. This creates memories. Anyone who thinks back to the release of GTA 5 around eleven years ago will probably see themselves going to a games store or an electronics store to secure the game as early as possible. It would be possible to create this hype – this feeling – with GTA 6 too. This could be achieved primarily through physical game versions with real pre-order goodies, some trailers, posters or other merch that is not available when purchased online. Fans and collectors would welcome this – and specialized chains like Gamestop could benefit twice as much.

Printed guides or other physical rewards may also appear that bring players back to game stores. Exclusive deals would also be conceivable, for example like in LA Noire, where the goodies received depended on the stores (even if Rockstar Games had activated the in-game rewards for everyone a short time later). The expectations for GTA 6 are so high that this special community feeling, waiting together in the store until midnight, could increase the hype even more. Players of the younger generation don’t know this in this form – and the release of GTA 6 would be the perfect time to create lasting memories of the store culture.
