Risk of breaking a woman’s neck: a rheumatologist called a disease with serious consequences

According to statistics, every third woman and every fifth man over 50 years old are at increased risk of breakage. Rheumatologist, candidate of medical sciences Marina Shupina told Klops about this.

The disease that causes abnormal bones is called osteoporosis and it happens without symptoms. “A person usually goes to see a doctor after a break, and often after the second or third,” Shupina said.

Osteoporosis is divided into two types

  • Basic form. It occurs at menopause in women and in the senile period (senile) in men. The reason for this is a deficiency of vitamin D, calcium or a deficiency disorder.

“Usually the first fracture occurs 6-8 years after menopause, and in the stronger sex it is diagnosed at the age of 70,” said the rheumatologist.

  • Secondary form. It is found among young people, working age. Osteoporosis occurs for many reasons, including medications.

It is important to recognize the pathology in advance, because the fragility of the vertebrae and limbs often leads to impotence and disability. “The first break will judge the second. The risk of breaking a woman’s neck increases several times, and with such an injury, about 10% of patients die within the first year,” said the rheumatologist.

To prevent adverse effects, drug treatment is necessary. Special preparations restore the mineral density of bone tissue and protect against subsequent fractures.

“A doctor can choose an effective treatment, and only taking into account the symptoms and characteristics of the patient’s condition,” concluded the doctor of medical sciences.
