Review of the book “Artificial Intelligence in Vocational Education: The Future of Work and Education with Intelligent Machines?! (in German)”

Vocational training is constantly evolving: new professions are emerging and existing ones are changing or even dying out. Technological progress is reinforcing this dynamic: digitization and in particular artificial intelligence (AI) are causing far-reaching changes in many professional fields. Intelligent systems and machines can support patient care or the drafting of contracts, among other things. Although the application of AI is often still very limited and focused on a narrow environment, its development is astonishing. In order to counteract its dangers and disadvantages, human-machine interactions should be given priority. The authors critically reflect on the effects of AI on vocational training. In a first part, they examine the implications of AI on commercial and technical professions, industrial professions, IT professions and nursing professions. In a second part, they devote themselves to research areas on AI in vocational training – from individualization through hybrid intelligence to learning analytics, augmented reality and virtual reality to professional rehabilitation and learning location cooperation.
