The Court of Appeal did not grant Helena Koivu permission for further processing.
AOP
The Court of Appeal will not take up the proceedings Helena and Mikko Koivun custody dispute between them. Helena Koivu had appealed the June decision of the District Court of Varsinais-Finland to the Court of Appeal of Turku, which did not grant permission for further proceedings in the case.
Koivu divorced in February 2020. Since then, the ex-couple has had a constant and public argument. Only Helena Koivu has been in the vote.
Residence Finland
Mikko and Helena Koivu got married in 2014. The family previously lived together in Minnesota, USA, where Mikko Koivu played ice hockey for a long time.
After his career ended, the ex-hockey star moved to Finland with his children in July 2023, while Helena stayed in Minnesota to live.
The local court decided in April 2023 that the children’s place of residence will be Finland in the future. At that time, the parents had announced that they were ready to live in the same country as their children.
Mother didn’t move
The custody dispute was discussed in the Varsinais-Finnish district court in the summer. Helena Koivu demanded that the decisions of the Minnesota court be changed and that she be granted sole custody of the children.
Helena’s demands were based on, among other things, the fact that the children’s mother does not have realistic opportunities to move to Turku. The district court considered the children’s separation from their mother to be a clear change in their lives, but this was due to the fact that the mother has not moved to Finland.
According to the district court, there is no independent basis for Helena Koivu’s decision not to change.
The decision of the Court of Appeal can still be appealed to the Supreme Court if it grants leave to appeal.
