Boeing sacks defense chief after Starliner problems

Saint Joseph., Boeing announced on Friday the dismissal of the head of its Defense, Space and Security unit, Ted Colbert, due to problems with weapons projects and with the Starliner spacecraft, whose crew will not return to Earth until 2025.

Colbert, who will leave the aircraft manufacturer “effective immediately,” will be replaced by the company’s current chief operating officer, Steve Parker, who will take over as acting head of the division, Boeing’s new president and CEO, Kelly Ortberg, announced in an email sent to employees.

This unexpected change comes after the Boeing-produced Starliner left two astronauts stranded on the International Space Station (ISS) for months following numerous technical problems with the partially reusable spacecraft.

NASA astronauts Barry Wilmore and Sunita Williams, who have been on the International Space Station’s orbital complex since June 6 and whose mission in space was initially for one week, will thus continue their work formally as part of the Expedition 71/72 crew until February 2025.

Cost overruns in the conversion of presidential aircraft

On the other hand, the Boeing division currently headed by Ted Colbert is facing other problems, such as the high cost overruns in converting two 747 jumbo jets and the KC-46 tanker aircraft into new planes for the American presidents.

As things stand, operating losses recorded by this division have reached one billion dollars (about 895 million euros) in the last quarter, and are unlikely to improve in the current quarter.
