As the face of Calvin Klein’s advertising campaign in the 1990s, Jenny Shimizu became the first top model of Asian descent. For many years, the Californian with the androgynous facial features was a permanent fixture on the catwalks, modeling for Versace, Prada, Jean Paul Gaultier, Levi’s and the Pirelli calendar.
After meeting Madonna in 1993 during the filming of her song “Rain”, she began an affair with the Queen of Pop. In the documentary series “In Vogue: The 90s” on the US streaming platform Hulu, Shimizu now looks back on this time at the singer’s side. According to her, she often flew all over Europe at the musician’s request just to meet up for sex at night. “You couldn’t say no to Madonna in the 90s!” explains Shimizu. But she never had a problem with that – on the contrary.
“It was great to feel like a high-class prostitute,” the 57-year-old recalls of the time. “I got a call asking: ‘Can you meet me at my show in Paris? You’re in Europe, aren’t you?’ And I said: ‘Yes, I’ve just finished with Prada, I’m taking the next plane.'” And so they met at the Ritz Hotel at four in the morning and had sex before the model flew back to Milan for her next job. “My wife is going to kill me,” Shimizu jokes. She has been married to brand consultant and fashionista Michelle Harper since 2014.
Relationship with Angelina Jolie
Jenny Shimizu made it clear in her memoirs last year that she and Madonna had no feelings for each other. “It wasn’t about an emotional connection, it was about driving each other into sexual ecstasy,” she wrote about her brief affair with the singer. “I loved the fact that I was at this woman’s command. It turned me on to be sent to her room whenever she wanted sex.”
At some point, however, according to US media, Shimizu’s time with Madonna overlapped with her relationship with another celebrity – Angelina Jolie. However, the model entered into a real relationship with the actress, whom she met on the set of “Foxfire”. Jolie told “Girlfriends” magazine in 1997 that Shimizu could have been “a deep love” for her. “I probably would have married Jenny Shimizu if I hadn’t married my husband,” Jolie said at the time about her ex, “Trainspotting” star Jonny Lee Miller. “I fell in love with her the first time I saw her.”
