Madeleine case: Suspect in her disappearance ‘confessed to kidnapping child’, says inmate – 2024-09-25 16:16:30

The suspect in her kidnapping Madeline McCannChristian Bruckner, allegedly confessed to a fellow inmate that he took a child from a Portuguese apartment, a German court heard Wednesday.

The 47-year-old convicted of rape allegedly asked his fellow inmate, Laurentiu Codin, if “he too” was in prison for offenses against children. He then revealed he took “a child” during a burglary while living in the Algarve,” the court was told, according to a Dailymail report.

Codin claimed Bruckner “begged him to burn his hideout when he got out of prison and asked him if a child’s DNA could be taken from bones underground.”

This development came after German police had previously named Bruckner as the prime suspect in the May 2007 abduction of 3-year-old British Madeleine McCann from her family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz.

So speaking before the district court in Braunschweig, where Christian Bruckner is on trial for other sex crimes, Laurentiu Codin told a story that bore striking similarities to the night Madeleine McCann disappeared.

The key testimony about Madeleine – What Bruckner’s inmate said

“It was in an area where there are hotels and rich people live. He mentioned that he was somewhere with an open window, he told me that. He was looking for money” the suspect’s fellow prisoner in the case of little Madeleine reportedly said.

“He said he didn’t find any money but he found a child and took him. Two hours later, there were police and dogs everywhere, so then he ran away, out of the area,” he continued.

“I’m just saying what he told me. With him was a person, with whom he had quarreled, supposed to be his wife. He said he took the child to Portugal in his car and while the police and dogs were at the house, he drove off and disappeared,” Codin said.
