The recent variation in the price of a quintal of garlic in Ecuador is attributed to various factors, according to the District Directorate of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG). Although drought has been a recurring theme, the MAG clarifies that it is not the only reason behind this increase.

Garlic production in the country ranges from 8 to 22 metric tons, depending on the technology applied in cultivation, including proper management of fertilization, soil and pest control.

The provinces of the Sierra Norte stand out for their best production levels thanks to their climatic conditions and altitude.

In Tungurahua, approximately nine hectares of garlic are cultivated, which represents only 1% of the national total. However, this crop has faced difficulties, mainly due to the low quality of the seeds used, which have contaminated the soil with pathogens, such as fungi and nematodes.

This contamination limits the soil’s capacity to receive more than one crop cycle, forcing people to wait up to 12 years to plant garlic again on these lands.

Currently, garlic is grown in the Pilahuín parish and the communities of Cunucyacu, Pucara, Llangahua, Esperanza and the October 10 Association.

Poor seed quality, particularly that contaminated with the fungus Sclerotinia, has led to new areas being sought for cultivation, affecting local production.

Alcides Quinatoa, manager of the Ambato Wholesale Market, said that the introduction of Peruvian garlic to the market could contribute to a reduction in prices.

Quinatoa mentioned that pests and drought have impacted local production, with significant losses reported in Cotopaxi, where 500 hectares of crops have been affected.

In the midst of these challenges, MAG continues to work on solutions that improve the quality of production and ensure the sustainability of garlic cultivation in the country. (I)
