The notice recently received by more than 400 workers of retirement age from the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), which consists of the cessation of their functions, is a measure within the framework of the economic plan and bitter medicine that Nayib Bukele announced in the inauguration speech of his second unconstitutional term.
A political analyst and university professor, who spoke to Radio YSUCA on condition of anonymity, claims that layoffs are taking place in several government institutions, and it is known that they will increase as the end of 2024 approaches.
The analyst also said that there is evidence that only a few of the positions of those dismissed from the institutions are filled, especially with young and inexperienced staff, who are paid a salary lower than that established in the institutional budget. In some cases, the amount allocated for a budgeted salary is used to pay two young employees.
Another measure that the Government is using to fill vacant positions is through requests to the country’s private universities to provide them with students in social service or students on internships. In the latter case, they grant intern students a financial bonus of approximately $275.00, and they are not entitled to benefits such as Social Security and AFP.
Interns are required to report Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; in other words, they are practically public employees, but they do not receive the equivalent of the minimum wage in the service sector.
She believes that this, on the one hand, directly affects people who lose their jobs; and on the other, it impoverishes the work of young people who enter the labor market. The same source said that Carolina Recinos, presidential commissioner for operations and government cabinet, has recently been seen in meetings with some representatives of private universities in the country, to request, among other things, support for the plans that the Government intends to develop.
The source claims that with these measures the government can hope to reduce current state spending. But this measure, apart from being unpopular, is contradictory, since it has recently become public knowledge that some officials have monthly salaries of more than forty thousand dollars.
