Argentina strengthens its ties with Italy and Canada

Within the framework of the High Level Week of the 79th United Nations General Assembly, in whose General Debate President Javier Milei spoke this afternoon, Foreign Minister Diana Mondino continued her work agenda today in New York, which included bilateral meetings with her counterparts from Italy, Canada and the United Kingdom.

In the morning, after attending the opening of the General Debate of the General Assembly, Foreign Minister Mondino held a job meeting with his counterpart from the Italian Republic, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Italian Republic, Antonio Tajani, who confirmed his visit to Argentina on October 7 and 8, along with an important business delegation.

Among the topics discussed during the working meeting, both ministers reviewed political issues on the bilateral agenda as well as the serious situation in Venezuela, among several other regional and global issues. On the other hand, they agreed on the need to expand and diversify bilateral trade in strategic sectors, especially in areas such as food, knowledge-based services, biotechnology, software and the aerospace sector. For his part, Mondino pointed out the dynamism of Italian investments in Argentina and the diversity of sectors in which companies from that country are present at this historic moment.

The Chancellor also met with Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly, to give continuity of contacts that high-level officials from both countries have been maintaining in recent months.

Mondino and Joly highlighted the excellent level of bilateral relations, which are based on shared principles, values and interests, while also analyzing key issues of common interest at the hemispheric and global level, based on convergent priorities.

During the meeting, they discussed shared efforts to promote democracy and the rule of law in the region, focusing mainly on regional challenges such as the situation in Venezuela, Nicaragua and Haiti. In this regard, they discussed Argentina’s key role in supporting democratic governance and combating the erosion of the rule of law and human rights in the region. They also discussed their position on extra-regional conflicts and shared concerns about the Russian aggression against Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East.

At another point on his agenda, The Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship held a meeting with her counterpart from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, David Lammy, with whom it advanced a broad agenda of issues that include different aspects related to the South Atlantic, to which is applied – as well as to its results – the safeguarding formula of sovereignty that appears in paragraph 2 of the Joint Declaration of October 19, 1989 referring to the sovereignty dispute over the Malvinas, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime spaces.
