And that includes film and television studios like AMC, which had to pay up to $104,000 for broadcasting its warning in an episode of The Walking Dead. More specifically, the FCC’s scolding came for a moment that occurs at the beginning of the 10th episode of the ninth seasonwhen we travel back to the beginnings of the zombie apocalypse on TWD and are given a glimpse into the origin story of a key character at that point in the show.
“These are warnings that can help save lives”
More than one might think that its broadcast in highly successful series and films like the one we are dealing with helps to spread the sound and its meaning among the audience, however the authorities are concerned that the population becomes insensitive to its broadcast, “causing them to be ignored.” Warnings that can save lives“, either because the sound confuses them or because they are fed up with hearing it. That is why it is preferred that the monopoly on its use be reserved to the competent bodies, with heavy sanctions for anyone who fails to comply.
“Unauthorized use of emergency system tones undermines the system itself and presents a substantial threat to public safety. The underlying policy is not limited only to the potential confusion of the listener at the time of inappropriate transmission of emergency tones; the Commission also warns that the use of simulated tones for unauthorized purposes – for commercial or entertainment purposes – can lead to a ‘crying wolf’ effect or ‘alert fatigue’“. — FCC statement
The Big Bang Theory prequel was also fined
And if you want another example, take a look at what happened in Young Sheldon, the prequel to Big Bang Theory. In an episode of the first season of the family comedy, the warning tone is played to warn of the arrival of a tornado, something that caused the Federal Communications Commission to “punish” them with a payment of $272,000. Jimmy Kimmel’s talk show Live! also had to pay out $395,000 for a similar situation in 2019.
