Mexico City. Pumas suffered more, but managed to rescue an important 1-0 victory against the Xolos de Tijuana that catapulted them to the playoff zone, this Sunday in a duel corresponding to matchday nine of the Apertura 2024 tournament of the Liga Mx, held at the Olympic University stadium.
The goal for the gold and blue team was scored by Ignacio Pussetto, in the 88th minute. Thanks to this result, the feline squad, which added two consecutive victories, accumulated 16 points and rose to fifth place in the general classification.
The Tijuana team, for its part, remained in ninth place, with 14 points.
During the first half of the match, which was attended by former player and coach of the auriazul team Bora Milutinovic, as well as the current coach of the national team, Javier “Vasco” Aguirre, the locals threatened in the first minutes of the match with a header by Guillermo Martínez and a right-footed shot by Piero Quispe, but neither managed to invade the team’s hut, guarded by Jesús Corona.
The team led by Colombian Juan Carlos Osorio responded with a shot from Kevin Castañeda that went just wide of the right corner, and moments later, Domingo Blanco unleashed a shot from the left that also failed to cross the goal line, so both teams went into the break without being able to open the scoring.
In the second half, the tone of the match was the same. Pumas continued to put pressure on the border team, but their lack of forcefulness prevented them from scoring.
Given the lack of goals despite the multiple opportunities they created, the feline coach Gustavo Lema brought Ignacio Pussetto onto the field to replace Quispe, in the 85th minute.
The change took effect, as just three minutes later, at 88, the newcomer took advantage of a corner kick to head home and finally open the scoring (1-0).
In stoppage time, the gold and blues received a scare when a shot from Xolos seemed to have entered the feline goal; however, the goal was not scored and the Pumas took the long-awaited victory.
