The hosts continued to start the match without Taylor Vause, Bode Wilde and Zach Kaiser. Instead of Philipp Bidoul, Edwin Tropmann from the Kölner Haie was in the squad today. The EC Bad Nauheim played the match very offensively at the beginning and had more of the game from the start, as well as chance after chance in the first ten minutes, but Weiden goalie Marco Wölfl was able to keep his team at zero with some brilliant saves. From the middle of the first third, the Weiden team were also able to make an offensive impact and challenged EC goalkeeper Jerry Kuhn time and again. In the end, the shot ratio was 14:15 shots on goal, which spoke for a balanced game – in line with the result.
The Red Devils got off to a better start in the second period. In the 22nd minute, Kevin Orendorz scored from a tight angle with a great backhand shot from Julian Lautenschlager to give the Devils the lead. In the 23rd minute, Weiden had a great chance, but the crossbar saved the EC from a Bohac shot. From then on, the game was even. Then the 32nd minute: First, Marius Erk was sent to the penalty box for tripping, and then Marc El-Sayed for delaying the game. The EC fans were upset about the penalties against their Devils. Weiden knew how to use the double majority effectively: Tyler Ward equalized after a pass from Tomas Rubes. Weiden had now tasted blood and followed on. Once again, it was Tyler Ward who scored with a one-timer to give the Blue Devils the lead for the first time. Weiden got the upper hand, won more duels, and in the 37th minute Fabian Voit scored the third goal for the Blue Devils. Tyler Ward and Neal Samanski missed here, and Jerry Kuhn prevented Weiden’s fourth goal with brilliant saves twice between the 50th and 55th minutes, which might have meant an early decision. Then the 56th minute: Bad Nauheim had the advantage, but Weiden defended with all their might and was able to prevent the equalizer. The game became more heated. After another suspension for both teams, Adam Mitchell took Jerry Kuhn off the ice in the 58th minute in favor of a sixth field player. Both teams fought for every inch of ice, but in the end the guests won 3:2.
Weiden’s coach Sebastian Buchwieser said after the final whistle: “Our power play in the second third brought us the victory today. In the last third we defended passionately and therefore deserved the victory in the end.”
“We didn’t play well today. We had too many turnovers in the neutral zone. The team fought hard until the end. But the bottom line is that Weiden deserved the win,” said EC head coach Adam Mitchell after the game.
