The European selection won the Laver Cup exhibition tennis tournament after a two-year hiatus. Carlos Alcaraz from Spain decided his victory 13:11 on the world team. The old number one in the world defeated the American Taylor Fritz 6:2 and 7:5 in the last singles match in Berlin.
The European team lost 4:8 after Saturday, but Alcaraz and Casper Ruud from Norway reduced it to 7:8 with a 6:2 and 7:6 victory over the American couple Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe. However, Shelton then beat Russian Daniil Medvedev 6:7, 7:5 and 10:7.
Tiafoe could then retain the victory of the world team, but he did not finish the match with good play by Alexander Zverev. After winning the first set, the American led 4:2 in the second set, but in the end he lost to the home tennis player 7:6, 5:7 and 5:10.
Alcaraz did not give Fritz a chance in the first set. In the second, the winner of this year’s Roland Garros and Wimbledon was leading 4:2, but finally decided with a break at 5:5. So he bid farewell to captain Björn Borg, who will be replaced by Yannick Noah next year. Andre Agassi will lead the world selection in place of John McEnroe.
