An 18-year-old from Werdohl caused an accident on Gildestrasse. The police are investigating evidence of an illegal car race.

Werdohl – A joyride by four young people from Werdohl ended with a total write-off near the McDonald’s branch on Saturday evening at 7:05 p.m. The 18-year-old from Werdohl and his 20-year-old passenger were slightly injured and were taken to Lüdenscheid Hospital as a precaution, where the passenger remained in hospital due to “discomfort”. The two other occupants of the accident vehicle – a 16- and 17-year-old from Werdohl – got out of the older Audi unharmed.

According to witnesses, the car, which was traveling on Gildestrasse in the direction of Plettenberg, passed the fast-food branch at a significantly excessive speed.

Speed limit of 30 km/h applies on Gildestraße

A short time later, the 18-year-old driver lost control of the blue Audi on the road where the speed limit is 30 km/h, veered off the road to the right, drove over the curb and crashed into the railway embankment. The Audi A3 was only worth scrap after the impact. The police estimate the total damage at around 12,000 euros. Since tire tracks were seen in the immediate vicinity and there were witness statements about the 18-year-old’s driving style, the accident investigation team from Dortmund was called in, which carefully evaluated and documented all traces on site.

According to the police, there is initial suspicion of an illegal car race with a second, as yet unknown vehicle. If it is proven that the driver took part in an illegal car race, he could face a fine or a prison sentence of up to two years. There was no evidence that the driver involved in the accident had consumed alcohol or drugs.

The Werdohl fire brigade disconnected the battery, sprinkled leaking operating fluids with binding agents and helped to illuminate the accident site.

It was a long evening for the Werdohl police, as the operation on Gildestrasse could only be completed at around 1.30 a.m., a good six hours after the accident.
