The Costa Rican press celebrated the futsal team’s advancement to the round of 16 at the World Cup in Uzbekistan, after beating the host country 5-3.
The national team added four points with the victory to continue on its path in the tournament, thanks to goals from Edwin Cubillo, Yosel León, Diego Chavarría, Minor Cabalceta and Jean Salas, highlighted the newspaper La República.
The Central American nation’s team is now hoping to find out its next opponent, which could be Brazil or the winner of Group C, in its attempts to continue making history at the World Cup in Uzbekistan, the publication reported.
Argentina leads that group, followed by Ukraine and Afghanistan, he added, while the newspaper El Observador also highlights the selection of Costa Rican striker Minor Cabalceta as the best player of the match, and Edwin Cubillo as the first national to play in four World Cups.
The newspaper La Teja, for its part, believes that Costa Rica triumphed “in an agonizing way against Uzbekistan” and qualified as the best third place, although the groups are still to be defined, including the 5-2 victory of the Netherlands against Paraguay.
Paraguay currently occupies first place in the competition with six points; the Netherlands, second (five); Costa Rica, third (four) and Uzbekistan, fourth (one).
La Teja describes that the Costa Ricans surpassed their rival on the scoreboard with 16 minutes left in the first half, through a goal by Edwin Cubillo, in a play caused by Minor Cabalceta.
The home team tied the game three minutes before the end of the first half, with a shot by Mashrab Adilov after a rebound; but Costa Rica then took the lead again, through a steal by Daniel Gómez, who passed it to Yosel León.
The Central American team closed these group stage matches of the Futsal World Cup with a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands; a 5-2 defeat against Paraguay and this 5-3 defeat on Friday against Uzbekistan, according to the media.
