Two men aged 28 and 42 are in custody on suspicion of particularly serious fraud in connection with the operation of corona test centres.
The officers of the Heidelberg Criminal Investigation Department are currently investigating several people on behalf of the Heidelberg Public Prosecutor’s Office, including for commercial and gang-related billing fraud in the healthcare sector.
From the end of 2021, the suspects gradually joined forces to create a more than temporary source of income for themselves through the fraudulent operation of several corona test centers in the Rhein-Neckar district and thus to make a living. As a result of billing for corona tests that were not carried out or could not be billed, unauthorized payments totaling almost three million euros are said to have been made by the Baden-Württemberg Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians.
At the request of the Heidelberg public prosecutor’s office, the Heidelberg district court issued several search warrants for the residential and business premises of several accused persons in the city of Heidelberg and the Rhein-Neckar district, which were executed on Thursday, September 19, 2024.
This included a restaurant on the Georgi market square in Leimen, which was searched from around 7 a.m. onwards. A large number of parents with schoolchildren who were on their way to the Turmschule and saw what was happening, as well as many workers who were setting up the fair, were very surprised by the large amount of police activity, which was of course the subject of conversation in front of the Turmschule.
During the searches, extensive evidence was secured and measures to confiscate assets were initiated. In addition, the Heidelberg District Court issued arrest warrants against five of the suspects at the request of the Heidelberg Public Prosecutor’s Office. They were then brought before the judge at the Heidelberg District Court. She executed the arrest warrants against two of the suspects on suspicion of fraud. Both suspects were then taken to different correctional facilities. The execution of the arrest warrants against three other suspects was suspended subject to conditions.
The investigations by the Heidelberg Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Heidelberg Criminal Investigation Department are ongoing.
