Thuringian animal shelter has to say goodbye – “Long, rocky road”

Obelix the dog is not even two years old – and yet the male has already been through a lot. And it hasn’t always been pretty. Completely dehydrated and emaciated, he and his former “owner” stood in front of the doors of the Nordhausen animal shelter in Thuringia in May 2024. At that point, he could barely stand on his feet. It was clear to the staff: Obelix needs people who will take proper care of him.

But now it’s time for the employees to say goodbye. But that’s no reason to be sad – quite the opposite.

Thuringia Animal Shelter: Obelix’s fate is shocking

When Obelix stood at the gates of the animal shelter, the staff didn’t hesitate for long. They took the dog to the vet immediately. They shared his fate on Facebook – and experienced a huge wave of sympathy. Many people were moved by the dog’s fate. They supported the Kangal crossbreed and the animal shelter with donations of money and goods, so that the staff could lovingly nurse the dog back to health (we reported).

And yet there is still a lot to do. Obelix is fearful. He is reserved. Small children scare him. But the staff are sure that he will flourish in loving hands. And that is why they have been eagerly looking for a new, loving home for Obelix. It should be a “great family with a large property for the herd protection dog mix”. A place “where he can simply enjoy his life”.

“A long, rocky road”

And it seems as if the employees have found just that place. Because the team was able to announce on Facebook that Obelix has finally found a new home. “A long, rocky road” lies behind everyone. People weren’t exactly lining up to take in the Kangal crossbreed. “But we always believe that every pot finds its lid,” the employees were sure at all times.

More news:

That should also be the case with Obelix. On Friday (September 20th) he was allowed to move into his new home. In the hope that he will be able to live a life “with lots of love” there. And that is what many Facebook users wish him. “He deserves it so much,” wrote one person, for example. “We wish you a wonderful dog life. Thank you to the adopters,” wrote another.
