Neschwitz. Where do bats sleep? What do they eat? Do they really drink blood? These and other questions were recently answered by the Neschwitz Nature Conservation Station at the third Night of the Bats in the castle park. 30 participants – adults and children – immersed themselves in the world of the little flying artists that evening.
The event began with a lecture on the diversity of the more than 1,200 species of bats worldwide. At this point, the vampire bat was mentioned, which is one of three species that actually feeds on blood – but more on that of cattle and then only consumes a maximum of one egg cup full of it per day. After the theory, there were various ways of dealing with local bats.
Shortly before sunset, everyone gathered and went on a bat excursion through the castle park. Various hanging places of the animals were literally illuminated and one or two animals were discovered – to everyone’s delight. Bats could be observed in a crack in the masonry and at the nearby pond, among other places. A bat detector also ensured that one or two species of bat flying around could be registered.
“It was a successful evening,” summarizes the Neschwitz Nature Conservation Station. “We are delighted with the great interest.” Another Night of Bats is planned for 2025.
