Following the suicide of a nurse in early June in the hematology department of Béziers hospital, the 35 caregivers in the department went on sick leave, which led to its closure due to lack of staff. In her farewell letter, the nurse spoke of her suffering at work, moral harassment and deleterious management, reports France Blue.
A month later, an audit was requested by the hospital’s three unions (Force Ouvrière, CGT and CFDT) within the hematology department. The report concluded that there was a serious communication problem within the hospital establishment.
Especially since the death of the nurse, a stretcher-bearer took his own life at the end of August after receiving a letter at home announcing a change of service. A volunteer firefighter also testified to colleagues about harassment at work. Finally, at the beginning of September, another employee tried to kill himself.
All departments seem to be affected by this lack of internal communication, notes the CGT. Staff say they are abandoned, not heard, not given feedback on the problems they report to their department heads and management. The report describes “a lack of organization with doctors, with shifts in tasks, obligations to take initiatives, responsibilities that they perhaps should not have taken on so as not to put the patient in danger. Staff also describe a lack of listening because we have the possibility of reporting problems to management via adverse event sheets and a priori, they had difficulty getting feedback. This report shows real malaise at work.”
When contacted by France Bleu, the hospital management did not wish to respond.
