The consumer price index (CPI) recorded an increase of 1.7% last August compared to the same month in 2023, according to the High Commission for Planning (HCP).

This variation is the result of the increase in the food products index by 2% and that of non-food products by 1.4%, explains the HCP in an information note relating to the CPI of August 2024.

For non-food products, the variations range from a decrease of 1.4% for “Health” to an increase of 3.7% for “Housing, water, gas, electricity and other fuels”, the same source said.

Compared to July, the CPI recorded an increase of 0.8%, resulting from the 1.8% increase in the food index and the stagnation of the non-food index.

On the other hand, prices decreased by 4% for “Fruits”. For non-food products, the decrease mainly concerned the prices of “Fuels” with 1.8%, specifies the HCP.

The most significant increases in the CPI were recorded in Al-hoceima with 2.8%, in Safi with 1.5%, in Errachidia with 1.2%, in Agadir, Dakhla, Settat and Beni-Mellal with 1.1%, in Oujda with 1%, in Fez and Tetouan with 0.9%, in Kenitra with 0.8%, in Meknes with 0.7%, in Casablanca, Marrakech and Rabat with 0.6%, in Guelmim with 0.5% and in Tangier and Laayoune with 0.4%.

Under these conditions, the underlying inflation indicator, which excludes products with volatile prices and products with public tariffs, would have seen an increase of 0.3% in August 2024 compared to July 2024 and 2.6% compared to August 2023.
