Pumas CU beats Burros Blancos 41-22; wins derby after 5 years

Mexico City., In an atypical silence and lacking the main protagonists – the fans with their tireless cheering and the family atmosphere – the Pumas CU defeated the Burros Blancos of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) 41-22, ending 5 consecutive years without winning the student classic.

At the start of the game, Yadiel Ponce made an impressive comeback to take control of the field and into the red zone. He then scored the first goal himself.

The Burros responded in kind with a spectacular return by Rogelio Altamirano to the opposing red zone, however, they had to settle for a first field goal by Michell Franco.

In a lapse of attention by the Puma offense, the locals managed to get an interception by Atzin López, but again they could only reflect it with 3 additional points in their favor.

The Golden Claw, who had just beaten the Anahuác Lions 31-17, shook off that bitter taste through Adán Chavéz, who made an important ground run to score the university team’s second touchdown.

Thanks to the auriazul defense, the hosts were unable to score more points and allowed, with 17 seconds left in the first half, their kicker Sergio Robles to score a 21-yard field goal to increase the difference at the Wilfrido Massieu, atypically without its classic war of huelums, goyas and other shouts in the stands.

The Zacatenco team’s ineffectiveness in converting offenses into touchdowns continued throughout most of the game and into the third quarter, and it was not until the beginning of the fourth quarter when quarterback Axel Medina connected with his receiver Jesús Ávila, to achieve his first touch of the afternoon and put the score at 27-16.

From this point on, the match revived ghosts for the university students and hopes for the hosts, as the Burros’ marshal regained confidence, which allowed him to shorten the difference to just 9 points behind his bitter sporting rival.

However, almost halfway through the final quarter, and with a rotation of starting quarterback Leonardo Garza, and with great effectiveness in the air, CU added three more points to make it 34-22.

Although Medina continued to seek an epic comeback, with extensive passes and playing even on fourth downs, the Puma defense did not cease so much in wide coverages on its perimeter and backers who penetrated the protection pocket of the Polytechnic pitcher.

When the gold team was expected to run out the clock in their last offensive series, Santiago Lovera came in as a substitute and connected a deep pass to Raúl Rodrigo Blanco to once again breach the cherry perimeter and, added to Andrea Martínez’s extra point, closed the score with a 41-22 advantage for his team.

The game was held behind closed doors because it fell on September 15, and “Mexico City will be using many of its resources, including the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection,” the IPN announced days before.

With this, Pumas adds its second consecutive victory and the Burros another defeat, after losing in week 1 against Linces UVM by 7 to 17.
