Samaritan’s Purse is serving the needs of Butte and Tehama counties in California’s northern Central Valley, a region with a long history of catastrophic wildfires, where wildfires have consumed nearly 480,000 acres of land and destroyed more than 250 homes since they began on July 24. Now contained, the Park Fire was the fourth-largest in state history.
Samaritan’s Purse is responding in the town of Cohasset, California, a community near Chico that bore the full brunt of the fire and experienced near-total devastation.
We have deployed a disaster relief unit—a truckload of supplies and equipment—from our West Coast Ministry Center in Fullerton, California, along with additional support vehicles, as we begin to respond. Volunteers will help homeowners sift through the ashes to rescue valuable belongings and share the hope of Jesus Christ.
We will begin accepting volunteers on Friday, September 20. Teams will serve from our home base at the host church, YWAM Chico at 15850 Richardson Springs Road in Chico. Chaplains from the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team will also be available in Cohasset to provide emotional support and spiritual comfort to homeowners still recovering from the aftermath of the fire.
In previous years, Samaritan’s Purse has responded to multiple fires in Northern California, including the deadly Camp Fire in 2018 and the Dixie Fire in 2021, both in the same region as Cohasset. As we return to the region again, we partner with churches to bring hope to homeowners in Jesus’ name.
Please pray for the many families recovering from this devastating fire and for our volunteers and staff who are serving. Please consider serving as the hands and feet of Jesus in Cohasset and sign up to volunteer today.
